Ping Forged Anser Irons

From Golf Magazine (August, 2010)
In 1967, Ping received a patent for its breakthrough Anser putter. It?s also the last time that the company sold forged irons (100 Anser sets). The new Anser, a forged multi-material iron, is designed to raise Ping?s profile among avid single-digit handicappers in Japan, Korea and other Asian markets. (Ping iron sales in Asia are relatively weak by Ping?s U.S. standards). Of course, Ping expects its share of converts in the States, too. The U.S. version, for the record, has an identical head design as the Asian model, the same shaft length, a 1-degree weaker loft per club, and the Project X shaft.

As expected, the clubhead materials and overall design package contribute to a softer, quieter impact sensation. The forged "8620 carbon steel" clubface is thick behind the hitting area, similar to a muscleback blade, while a "support bar" (just below the oval "custom tuning port") connects the face to the back flange. A heavy tungsten-nickel sole (22 percent of clubhead mass) serves many functions, too: It dampens vibration more so than less-dense metals (aka steel), shifts the club's center of gravity more rearward (to increase ball trajectory), and boosts overall forgiveness. The forgiveness bit ties into a hollow cavity (behind the lower portion of the face) that redistributes 30 grams away from the face. The Anser has forgiveness qualities that are similar to the i15's, but the Anser looks cleaner, feels noticeably smoother, produces more spin on short irons and flies slightly lower in the long irons.

From The Shop blog (March, 2010)
MIAMI Two weeks ago in Phoenix, before the start of the PGA Tour's Waste Management Open at TPC Scottsdale, several Ping staff players had a chance to see, hit and learn about the new Anser irons.

Matt Rollins, a Ping tour representative, said Monday, "The clubs are as forgiving as our i15 irons, but they are a little sleeker looking and they've got the word 'Forged' on the back, which we've never had."

For gearheads and Ping fans, that single word, forged, will raise eyebrows.

Ping has always made cast irons, a process that involves creating extremely-detailed molds and then filling them with liquid metal to create the clubheads. (Click here to see a video showing how Ping casts clubs.)

To make forged irons, a piece of metal is heated and then hammered or pressed into shape.

"We've been talking about making a forged iron for while," Rollins said. "But for our guys, it's kind of funny. Once we put chrome on a cast club, people thought it was forged.

"They are only available in Japan right now," Rollins said. "They might release it in the United States later, but I don't know." He explained that in the Japanese market, irons need to be forged in order to be perceived as high quality. Irons that are not forged simply don't sell well.

While not a super game-improvement iron, the Anser irons feature plenty of perimeter weighting and tungsten in the sole to help players get the ball into the air more easily. The PING badge on the back of the club is a weight that can be changed as part of the fitting process.

As more information about the Ping Anser irons becomes available, we'll pass it on.

Squareback 2

At first glance, the Squareback 2 may appear exactly the same as a Squareback 1, but with a plumbing neck. Take a longer look and Scotty's subtle design differences are revealed. To give players a bit more toe flow than the nearly-face-balanced Squareback 1, Scotty moved the neck slightly back toward the heel. Also, the plumbing neck is a mid-length neck, which aesthetically accommodates the boxier, crisper linesof the Squareback 2 at setup. The Squareback 2 maintains the same headweight as the Squareback 1, but it has a slightly thinner topline and a thicker cavity wall.

This model also continues Scotty's technologically-advanced Studio Select putter design with its bold, Tour-inspired Cherry Dot graphics, precision milled 303 stainless steel head, and factory interchangeable weights.

Get Fit: Tour Edge Fairway Woods

Two accomplished were recently fit for new Tour Edge fairway woods at Novogolf in Tappan, N.Y. The company has a six-step method for matching the ideal club with each golfer.

1 The fitter interviews you to gather club info and to learn about your typical miss, physical ailments, etc.

2 The fitter measures your clubs to determine lie, length, loft, etc.

3 You hit shots with your clubs. The Trackman launch monitor records ball speed, launch angle, spin and flight.

4 You try five or six models with manufacturers' "stock" shafts and "custom upgrade" options.

5 Fitter makes a recommendation based on your test session.

6 Novogolf builds clubs on-site. It tries to make each club swing and feel the same by weight-sorting heads, determining the dynamic "MOI" of your preferred club, and more.

Mark Cohen
Age: 52
Handicap: 10 Height: 5'7"
Weight: 170 lbs.
Occupation: Manufacturer
Residence: New York, NY
Old fairway wood: Steel head with shallow face, 13, proprietary Fujikura 65-gram graphite shaft, regular flex
New fairway wood: Tour Edge Exotics XCG-3, 15, Fujikura Motore Exotics 75 graphite shaft, stiff flex

Player Background: Mark's backswing is quite flat, which leads to an outside-in motion on the downswing. His club path is shut, the clubface is closed a bit at impact and his typical shot is a cut.

Player feedback "I hit my 3-wood both off the tee and from the ground. I cut it too much, so I'm trying to get a straighter ball flight."

William Cho President, Novogolf: "Mark produces lots of backspin and shots come down steeply. XCG-3 has a low center of gravity, which gives him more lift. The stock shaft (Fujikura Motore Exotics 75) decreases spin, too. This combo enables him to carry it longer and capture more roll.

During testing, he hit the CB3 Tour with a Mitsubishi Diamana White Board 73 shaft the farthest. Mark is opting for the XCG-3 since he likes it more visually (the shallow face gives him confidence), prefers the solid impact feel and it costs less."

Living the Lifestyle

I’ve always said that golf brings different worlds together, creating a lifestyle that people from all walks of life can enjoy. Think about one of the top surfers in the world punting massive airs, pulling into throaty barrels, making it all look like second-nature, only to dry off, head home, lace ‘em up and go play a round. It’s happening every day with cross-over athletes in all sorts of arenas — moto, surf, skate, snow, baseball, etc. They all have one thing in common: Everyone likes to tee it up.

Putter Studio friend Julian Wilson (pictured above rocking the Scotty Dog sticker on his board) is one of this new crop of young athletes who see beyond their professions and find time to enjoy the game of golf, as well.

Julian recently won the Sri Lankan Airlines Pro and is releasing his new movie next month (nearly two years in the making). You really have to check it out, surfer and non-surfer alike. Take a look at this webisode (of course there’s a nice putter shot in there, too

The more I play, the more I love it. This is a special golf course. I have more confidence in my pictures, and where I want to make that country or roll of the more I play the course. Today on the front is probably the most solid nine holes of the year.I got up and down to # 1 of a deep green side bunker. In # 2, a short par-4, I used the contours of the right of the Green bounce my 100 yard approach to approximately three feet shot. but my putt not valleys, such as the speed is not as fast as I expect. that was going to be on the last bad putt, I would like to thank for the entire day.

Tested: New Grooves vs. Old Grooves

Buyer's Guide: Wedges

Due to the USGA's rollback on groove dimension (in clubs with 25 degrees loft or more), tour pros are required to play wedge grooves that are narrower, shallower and have more rounded edges than in previous years. Is there a marked performance difference between "2010 condition of competition" (2010 C-C) wedge grooves and pre-2010 grooves? Hot Stix Golf, our exclusive research partner, tested both grooves and found dramatic results.

The Test
Five skilled amateurs with scratch handicaps were given brand new wedges with 56° of loft with "2010 condition of competition" grooves (referred to as "2010 C-C") and "pre-2010" grooves. (Recreational players can use pre-2010 grooves until 2024, but manufacturers must stop producing the clubs by the end of this year.)

The test was conducted in San Francisco on a 58° day. Hitting only Titleist ProV1 golf balls, testers hit full shots to a practice green from the fairway and from two-inch rough.

Testers struck five shots in each of the four scenarios:
1) "2010 C-C" wedge from the fairway
2) "Pre-2010" wedge from the fairway
3) "2010 C-C" wedge from two-inch rough
4) "Pre-2010" wedge from two-inch rough

Measurements on all shots were taken using a Trackman launch monitor. Backspin, launch angle, shot apex, descent angle and roll distance were all recorded.

From The Shop Blog (June 29, 2010)

NEWTON SQUARE, Pa. — This week at Aronimink Golf Club outside Philadelphia, Titleist staff players are getting their first chance to play the company's newest drivers — the 460cc 910D2 and 445cc 910D3.

What sets the new drivers apart from previous Titleist models is the Sure Fit Tour adjustment system. Using a torque wrench that comes with each club, golfers can set the clubhead into one of 16 different playing positions to customize face angle, lie angle and the playing loft.

The standard face-angle setting for the drivers is .5° open, but it can be made up to 1.5° open or 1.5° closed. As you adjust the clubface left or right, the effective loft changes within a 2.25° range.

According to Stephanie Bezilla, Titleist's metal woods development manager, the adjustable-head system is a natural advancement of Titleist's Sure Fit system that has been in place to expedite the custom-fitting process.

"With the 909 series, we developed Sure Fit as a system to really optimize fit through shafts," Bezilla says. "When we started to think about the ability to adjust loft, lie and face angle, we really wanted to replicate the Tour bending experience. So with the Sure Fit Tour, which is incorporated into 910 products, we now have the ability to adjust loft and lie independently."

She says now golfers can more easily optimize a drivers' launch angles and spin rates to help players maximize distance, then adjust lie angle to improve impact efficiency and dispersion control.

In addition to the adjustability features, the titanium crown of the 910 drivers is thinner and lighter than the crown in the 909 drivers. That automatically lowers the center of gravity. A new face insert in the club also helps to help increase ball speed. The weight plug on the bottom of the club is also adjustable, with the drivers coming with a 7 gram weight, but lighter and heavier weights will also be available.

Compared to each other, the 910D2 has a lower and deeper center of gravity than the 910D3, so it should naturally help players hit a slightly straighter, higher tee shot. It should also provide more stability.

Golfers who are looking for a boring trajectory and slightly more roll after the bounce will likely prefer the 910D3.

"We effectively wanted to create a D3 that was more playable and more stable for golfers, but still a viable low-spin option to increase distance," Bezilla says.

Information regarding stock shafts, as well as lofts that will be available at retail, has not be finalized but you can expect to see the 910 drivers arriving in pro shops later this year.
